| Claiming to
be self taught, Robert Oughton's art education began at his father's
illustrator's elbow. Formal training was in high school in which his
teacher tried hard but was not successful in instilling the necessary
artist motivation. Robert was accepted at a well known Philadelphia
art school...which he did not attend. 25 years of self employment at
optical and camera repair (which has evaporated in the digital revolution)
has left Robert with an appreciation of light and its effects. Robert's
mid life crises is to either 1) find a real job or 2) take up pen in hand
and draw 'til the savings run dry.
Artwork begins with extended rumination and then pictures are composed in soft pencil on Bristol Board, altered, erased, and recomposed. Ink begins with trepidation. Currently Oughton employs mainly technical pens of varying width and traditional India ink. Upon completion, the soft pencil is erased and any corrections are made. Scraping with a knife, or white ink can be used to restore white if desired. Finished drawings are dispatched to the local computer wizards who scan the drawings in high resolution and in color. Although India ink is very black it is a very warm black. The digitally reproduced drawings are amazingly close to the originals and a printed on a slightly rough, lovely paper. The only differences between original and print are the lack of texture scratches of the pen and the gloss of the ink. Oughton resides in Hellam, Pennsylvania with his encouraging weaver craftsmen wife, one or two musically inclined step-adults, two or more cats, and four ducks. The cats, ducks, and Hellam landmarks appear in many of Bob's work (look for the Wrightsville bridge in the Wynken Blynken window). |
